Godfred "Junior" Berger Jr. (March 18, 1942 – August 5, 2026) was a long-time Texas rancher, hot rod enthusiast, and a foundational figure in the local drag racing scene in Victoria, Texas.
Junior Berger and Six Flags Dragway
Founding and Involvement: In the 1950s, Junior Berger helped form the Rod Benders Club, a local group of National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) members who helped bring organized drag racing to the area.
Announcer and Operator: He served as the track announcer for Six Flags Dragway (originally established at the old Aloe Army Airfield outside Victoria), most notably documented announcing races during the mid-1960s.
Historical Legacy: Over the lifespan of the drag strip (which operated roughly from 1962 to 1975), Berger was recognized as one of the key stewards and owners/operators of the track's golden era. In his later years, he remained active in local car shows, fondly reminiscing about his time announcing at the dragway and his early hot rod days.
The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Double Divisional took place at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas from May 14–17, 2026. This event featured the Competition Eliminator category among its major classes. Event Overview: The "Double Divisional" format typically includes two complete divisional events within one race weekend, providing double points and double the competition. Competition Eliminator: A highly diverse category of drag racing where racers use handicaps based on established class indexes.

Great day of remembering Six Flags Dragway. Really appreciate all the history here about this amazing time period of drag racing in Victoria, Texas. (circa 1962-1974). This video starts off with the reunion's car show, Carl Magee's dragster demo and more. This is followed by stories told by each of the four owners of the drag strip over the time period, includes Jr. Berger, Bill Plemons, Kupp and John Clegg.
