L.P. Schultz’s stable, situated in the southern part of the city,
caught fire this afternoon about 2:30, but the blaze was extinguished
before much damage was done. About ten bales of hay burned. the fire alarm
system was not working well, and the hose truck got out before the alarm
sounded, the driver being notified of the fire by Mayor Schneider. The
hood and ladder truck did not reach the scene until late on account of
the fire horses being employed hauling gravel. Sam Starton’s horses
were hitched to the truck after considerable delay.

The management of the Uptown Theatre announced today that Lee Prause and
his 11-piece dance orchestra will give a stage show one time only tonight.
John H. Clegg, Jr., one of the best torch singers that this writer has
had the pleasure of hearing, will be featured with the orchestra. Following
the presentation Prause and his orchestra will play for a dance at Riverside
Hall.

Miss Ann Marie Smith has been selected Duchess representing Victoria in
the Court of Holidays during the ensuing Buccaneer Days in Corpus Christi
April 30 and May 2. Miss Smith will share honors at the Coronation Ball
and other social activities with all members of the Court.
Paul Reyna, son of Mr. and Mrs. Antonio J. Reyna of Refugio has been promoted
to ship’s serviceman third class aboard the USS Cape Esperance,
utility aircraft carrier operating between San Francisco and the Far East.

Victorians are not rushing to comply with the city’s requirement
for dog and cat registration, enforcement of which has just begun. Dwight
Williamson, sanitarian for Victoria City-County Health Unit which operates
the animal control program for the city, said Wednesday that only 310
people have registered animals since the enforcement program was announced
two weeks ago. One the basis of national statistics, Williams estimates
there are more than 12,000 dogs and 12,000 cats in the city. “The
national average is one dog and one cat for each four people,” he
said.
The latest Billy Graham film, “The Prodigal,” which has backing
of many Christian churches in Victoria, will be shown beginning Friday
and extending through Feb. 9 at Playhouse Cinema. The film has been described
as “a commentary on today’s society,” and has been previewed
by various local ministers. “The Prodigal” will be shown at
regular feature times and at regular prices.

Four Victoria College band students selected for the Texas Junior College
Teachers Association Honor Band are Marc Moreno, David Carbahal, Donna
Roemer and Boyd Allison. The four were chosen after statewide auditions.
Also picked were instrumentalists from 20 other junior colleges in Texas.
They will participate in musical events scheduled as part of the TJCTA
annual convention in Houston.
